The sponsorship thesis

Trust converts.
Reach doesn't.

Followers are a vanity number. The podcasters who close sponsors — and the brands who win — trade on something harder to fake: earned trust.

Who listeners actually act on

12%
Act on a trusted host's recommendation
Act on a big account's reach alone

The problem

The follower model is broken.

Downloads measure who showed up. They say nothing about who'll act.

A 500k-download show with no trust converts worse than a 20k show whose host is believed.

Trust is the currency. Reach is just the packaging.

The framework

How trust becomes ROI.

Every dollar of sponsor return traces back up the funnel. Skip a stage and the math breaks.

01
Authenticity
Who you are on mic and off. Unfaked, unfiltered.
02
Trust
The audience believes what you endorse.
03
Purchase
Belief moves to action — a click, a signup, a sale.
04
ROI
Action compounds into repeatable sponsor return.

The playbook

Pitch like trust is the product.

Three moves that turn a trusted audience into a signed sponsor — no download charts required.

Applied example

Same show. Two pitches.

Composite example — not a real show.

Before — reach-led

"We have 480,000 monthly downloads and a 4.8 rating. Ad slots are $3,500. Let me know if you want the media kit."

Leads with a number the brand can't tie to behavior. Nothing here proves anyone acts.
After — trust-led

"78% of my listeners have bought something I recommended — I survey them. I've run 3 finance sponsors; the last drove 1,900 tracked signups. I take one finance partner a quarter. Want the results deck?"

Proof of action, a real result, category exclusivity, scarcity. The download count never comes up.

The evidence

Where the 80% vs. 12% comes from.

Trust Capital's core claim is drawn from an MSc Football Business dissertation (UCFB / University of East London, 2025): "How Independent Football Podcasts Use Digital Marketing to Drive Brand Partnerships and Revenue Growth." A positivist, quantitative study — an online questionnaire completed by 111 self-identified regular football podcast listeners — tested three hypotheses with independent-samples t-tests and a one-way ANOVA.

HypothesisResult
H1 — More frequent social media interaction predicts purchaseNot supported (t = 0.49, p = .63)
H2 — Higher trust in the sponsoring brand predicts purchaseStrongly supported (t = 9.59, p < .001)
H3 — "Most influential" channel predicts purchase differencesNot supported (F(5,105) = 0.36, p = .835)
Straight talk

Where this doesn't apply.

Convenience sample. 111 respondents, likely overrepresenting highly engaged listeners — not a random population sample.
Binary purchase measure. Yes/no purchase, not frequency or value — it shows direction, not scale.
Cross-sectional design. A single snapshot in time can't establish causality, only association.
Self-report data. Trust and purchase were both self-reported, carrying recall and social-desirability risk.
